Coronavirus India update: Neighbourhood and standalone shops were allowed to resume business from Saturday but those in markets will remain shut till May 3 for the national lockdown to contain the coronavirus. All shops may open in rural areas but malls will stay shut in all places, said the Home Ministry in an order late Friday night.
The confirmed coronavirus cases jumped to 24,506 as the death toll mounted to 775, according to the Health Ministry.

Coronavirus: Fifa to distribute $150 million to member associations
The world football governing body, Fifa has announced that it will distribute $150 million to member associations over the next few days as the first step of a relief plan to assist the football community impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Each member association will receive $500,000, along with any other remaining funds they were due to receive. Fifa, in a statement, said that the operational funding for 2020 and 2019 will be paid to 211 national governing bodies across the globe. Read Here
Small-scale shops can open, says Kerala Chief Secretary
Kerala Chief Secretary Tom Jose on Saturday said the small-scale shops in the state can be opened in accordance with the Centre's order on easing of lockdown protocol. In a late night order on Friday, the Home Ministry said neighbourhood and standalone shops, including those in residential complexes, in urban areas have been allowed to open during the ongoing lockdown but those in the markets continue to remain shut till May 3. The order also said malls continue to remain shut but markets in rural areas can open. "Essential commodity shops and grocery stores can be opened. But jewellery shops and such establishments cannot be opened. However, there is no exemption in hotspots," Jose told reporters.
Kerala govt hospital deploys robot to serve COVID-19 patients
A government hospital in Ernakulam here has deployed a robot to serve food and medicines to coronavirus patients with an aim to reduce risk of infections for doctors and health workers. Malayalam star Mohanlal's Viswasanthi Foundation donated the autonomous robot to the COVID-19 ward of the Ernakulam government medical college hospital. The robot named 'KARMI-Bot' will be used to assist patients at the medical college's COVID-19 isolation ward from Saturday onwards,the Ernakulam district public relations department said in a release. The robot is developed by ASIMOV robotics, a company working under maker village of Kerala start-up mission.
IMCT suggests stricter implementation of lockdown in WB
Central team on COVID-19 writes to West Bengal government suggesting stricter implementation of lockdown in north Bengal. Two central teams are visiting the state -- one in Kolkata and the other at Siliguri in north Bengal. In a letter to Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha, the central team in north Bengal, led by senior bureaucrat Vineet Joshi, said more field officers are required to monitor and provide feedback about the effectiveness of various measures undertaken by the government. "As an immediate measure, it is suggested that stricter implementation of lockdown is absolutely necessary to avoid any further outbreak. A larger number of field officers are required to monitor and provide feedback about the effectiveness of various measures undertaken by the government," Joshi said in his letter to the chief secretary.
Singapore reports 618 new coronavirus cases; total at 12,693
Singapore on Saturday reported 618 new cases of novel coronavirus, taking the total number of infections to 12,693 with 12 deaths in the country, media reports said. The vast majority of the new cases are among the work permit holders residing in dormitories for foreign workers, including Indian nationals, who work in the labour intensive construction sector. A total of 25 dormitories, housing foreign workers, have been gazetted as isolation areas. Singapore is going through a "circuit breaker" period to stem the spread of COVID-19. The period was at first scheduled to end on May 4 but will now last until June 1. All the non-essential work places have been ordered to stay closed and residents are barred from leaving the house except to buy food and groceries or to exercise alone in the neighbourhood, Channel News Asia reported.
